Herpes simplex is a very common viral disease in humans that is not as commonplace as influenza and cold viruses.  The virus is a collection of viruses that usuaslly results in pain with sores and blisters, and is spread by direct contact with the infection not through the air like other viruses.

The herpes family has more than 25 members, of which 2 are most common:  Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV1) is the type that can cause sores around the mouth.  Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV2) is the kind that causes pain in the genital area. The cause of shingles and chickenpox is a different herpes virus named Zoster.

Once an individual has become infected with the virus the person has the virus for life.  The virus can stay dormant for several years or there can be many recurrences. 

Some reasons for herpes recurrence can be:

  • Stress or anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Other conditions
  • Sun exposure
  • Menstruation

Symptoms of the herpes virus can vary from one individual to the next.  When affected with the virus some people initially experience symptoms akin to flu and can develop a slight fever or aches.

An outbreak of herpes usually begins 2 and 8 days after infection occurs.  Initially, there may be a burning or tingling feeling, then followed by blisters and sores in the infected region.  Fluid in the blisters may be clear or cloudy and the area around the blisters a red color.  These blisters will burst and turn into open sores that will first scan and then heal.  During the outbreak do not burst the blister or sore, avoid touching the blister, then when the blister develops a scab, do not pick at the scabbed area.

For help with the pain of a sore or blister:-

  • Keep the area around the sore clean and dry
  • Take acetaminophen or aspirin
  • Put a cool or slightly warm cloth on the region

  • Cromolyn sodium used to reduce membrane sensitivity to allergens
