It’s never easy sitting down to review a pair of sunglasses, especially when what counts as a good pair can mean so many different things to different people, but we’ve made it a bit easier. Rather than review a paire of sunglasses and compare directly against a competitors pair, which lets face it, could be radically different, we’ve cheated by comparing the same sunglasses against each, all be it in different flavours.
Given the scope of this test, it won’t surprise you to know we have chosen the exceptionally popular Oakley Scalpel range with its 9 different variations. Oakley sunglasses are famed for their high quality, precision and performance and the Scalpel follows the same design ideal and pattern, there is no loss of quality in these premium sunglasses.
Within the range, you can choose from dark grey, polished black, two shades of brown and two different versions of white. White chrome are undoubtedly the most striking, but for sheer style and quality, the new range of Ducati signature glasses take first place.
You get the usual shades of black for the lenses, but there are other, more risky and garish options such as the purple optics on the white chrome version and the blood red set found in the dark grey scalpels sunglasses.
The frames are lightweight, strong and yet still ultra comfortable with their patented UNOBTAINIUM material which is said to increase grip with perspiration. Sports activities may challenge you, but they won’t removing your glasses from you thanks to the sticky stuff on the end of the frames.
As you would expect for designer glasses of this quality, the lenses are of the highest quality and shut out all the suns harmful UV rays whilst also protecting against the lesser known (but just as damaging) blue light. It’s worth mentioning that ANSI standards are met or exceeded for these glasses.
You may not have heard of HDO or High Definition Optics, but ignoring the marketing blurb for a moment, it simply means you are getting some of the finest glasses on the market and yet still shouldn’t be paying more than £100.
